When we sign and certify our documents in Bluebeam Revu, we can safely send them to others and know that they’re protected. However, if those recipients try to validate our signatures and certifications, they’ll receive an error that says “Signer’s Identity Unknown”. Even though our name and information is present on our signature, something seems to be missing.

The missing piece of this puzzle is called a “Digital ID Certificate”, also known as a “Security Certificate” and “.cer” file. This special piece of information is used to verify when and where a Digital ID was created. It’s a secure file that doesn’t reveal our sensitive information, and if it’s attached to our PDF with the “File Attachment” tool, it can be extracted and added to our client’s “Trusted Identities” list. All future certifications can be validated correctly with this file.
